What is a good quarter mile time?
Under 11 seconds is seriously fast and usually built. 11-13 is genuine performance-car territory. 13-14.5 covers most modern sporty cars. Over 14.5 is normal daily-driver pace — a family saloon is often 15-16. Trap speed matters as much as ET: it tells you about power, while ET also reflects how well the car launched.
Rough tiers
- Under 10 s — race car. Roll cage territory at most sanctioned tracks, and normally not a street-registered vehicle.
- 10-11 s — built street car, or a modern electric flagship straight out of the box.
- 11-13 s — serious performance. Modern V8 muscle, fast turbo saloons, well-sorted sports cars.
- 13-14.5 s — quick street. Hot hatches, warm saloons, entry sports cars.
- Over 14.5 s — daily. Perfectly normal, and still quicker than most of the traffic around you.
Read the trap speed, not just the time
Elapsed time is the headline, but trap speed — how fast you were going as you crossed the line — is often the more useful number. Trap speed depends mostly on power against weight and is relatively insensitive to how you launched. ET, by contrast, includes the launch, and a poor 60-foot can cost several tenths that have nothing to do with the engine.

The same car does not run the same time
Air density moves elapsed times more than most people expect. Between a cold, dense night and a hot, humid afternoon, an unmodified car can differ by several tenths — often more than the difference between two genuinely well-matched cars.

Why classes exist
A 500 hp car lining up against a 200 hp car is not a race, it is a formality. Every form of organised drag racing solves this somehow — bracket racing with dial-ins, class structures with rules, or index racing.
