Why the air is the first thing to check
Every other number on this page depends on it. An engine burns oxygen, and how much oxygen a lungful of air holds depends on temperature, pressure and humidity. Density altitude packs those three into one figure — and a hot, humid afternoon at a sea-level track can easily read 3,000 ft or more, which is worth several tenths in the quarter.
That is also why comparing raw times across different days is close to meaningless, and why correcting to a standard day is the only fair way to line two runs up against each other.More on what density altitude actually does →
